Dear Colleagues!

We are pleased to announce the 26th Conference of the European Cell Death Organization, entitled "Cell death in disease: from small molecules to translational medicine", which will be held in Saint Petersburg, Russia on October 10-12, 2018.

After successful 25 years, with the upcoming Conference we are opening a new quarter century of ECDO Conferences. Our vision from more than 25 years ago was that the modulation of apoptosis may open broad therapeutic opportunities. Indeed, the fascinating progress in cell death research has supported and expanded this vision, not only improving the understanding of the pathogenesis of various diseases associated with disturbances of this fundamental biological process, but also serving as a basis for the development of novel strategies for their efficient treatment. After many years of basic research in the cell death field, we are now encountering the exciting and dynamic development of various novel therapeutic strategies that target key components of cell death machinery. A number of novel compounds have been tested in clinical studies, and some have already been approved for clinical use. Hence, the 26th ECDO Conference will be focusing on the journey from small molecules to translational medicine, presenting the major highlights in the field.

The aim of the Conference is to bring together around 300 top-level international speakers and leaders in the field of cell death as well as young scientists, clinicians and students.

The program covers a wide range of several important topics, comprising both molecular mechanisms of recently discovered types of cell death, specific targeting of cell death pathways with newly discovered small molecules and their mechanism of action. Furthermore, the molecular processes in neurodegeneration, cancer and metabolic syndromes will be highlighted, providing more detailed insights into disease mechanisms and novel therapeutic strategies.

The ECDO Conference on Cell Death over the past 25 years was characterized by the tradition of scientific excellence and lively debate. The format of the conference includes keynote and long presentations, poster sessions and short oral communications, together with communal lunches and social programs. It creates a great environment for stimulating discussion and contact between participants at all levels.

This time around, the ECDO conference will be hosted for the first time in the cultural capital of Russia, in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg. On May 27, 1703, Peter the Great laid down the Peter and Paul Fortress, which became the first brick and stone building of the new city. The Historic Centre of St. Petersburg constitutes a UNESCO World Heritage Site. St. Petersburg is home to the Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world. Southern suburbs of the city feature former imperial residences, including Petergof, with majestic fountain cascades and parks, Tsarskoe Selo/Pushkin, with the baroque Catherine Palace and the neoclassical Alexander Palace, and Pavlovsk, which contains a domed palace of Emperor Paul and one of the largest English-style parks in Europe. Many famous scientists were working in St. Petersburg, among them Ivan Pavlov, Ilya Metchnikov and Dmitry Mendeleev. Alfred Nobel studied chemistry in St. Petersburg, invented dynamite and got his inspiration for the foundation of his world-famous awards - the Nobel Prizes.

We hope to welcome you in St. Petersburg at the ECDO Conference on Cell Death in disease: from small molecules to translational medicine!
